Dr. Orna Naftali

Orna Naftali is Senior Lecturer in the Department of Asian Studies and Associate Fellow at the Harry S. Truman Research Institute for the Advancement of Peace at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Her research interests include the anthropology of children and youth, schooling and education, gender and the family, nationalism and militarization in modern and contemporary China.
She completed a PhD in Anthropology at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB), and is the author of two books: Children, Rights, and Modernity in China: Raising Self-Governing Citizens (Palgrave Macmillan, 2014), and Children in China (Polity Press, 2016).
Her articles have been published in leading international academic journals, including The China Journal, Modern China, China Information, Childhood, and Oriens Extremus. She is currently engaged in a research project on "War and the Military in Contemporary Chinese Education: The Effects of Schooling and the 'Patriotic Education' Campaign on the Attitudes of Middle-School Students toward Armed Conflict" (supported by a Spencer Foundation grant, 2016-2019).
