This conference discussed the challenges to East Asia's security environment. The papers in the conference examined traditional security threats, as well as new threats such as terrorism and cybersecurity. They also examined the existing mechanisms and arrangements (military and institutional buildup, state-to-state alliances, and international organizations), as well as more recent arrangements, and offered varying assessments with regard to their ability to maintain regional stability in the face of multiple challenges.
