Prof. Ayman Agbaria, Sheikha Helawy and Noa Yaron-Dayan in conversation with Anat Sharon Belais

The poet Taha Muhammad Ali was born in the village of Saffuriyya in 1931. In 1948, the villagers were expelled from their homes, where the contemporary town of Tzipori is located. Taha’s family moved to the neighbouring city, Nazareth, where he lived until his last days. His poetry deals with lost childhood, with relatives and loved ones who have died or moved away to other places, and with the way memories become poetry: love-poetry that is political poetry, political poetry which is love-poetry.

Together with researcher Prof. Ayman Agbaria, author and translator Sheikha Helawy, and author Noa Yaron-Dayan, we will discuss the place of Taha Muhammad Ali within Palestinian Arabic poetry in Israel, his influence on young poets and the way he wrote of Saffuriyya, its landscape and the smells, with a sober look that fears no threat, seeks no revenge, and humbly cherishes true joy at the end of his lines.

המשורר טאהא מוחמד עלי נולד בכפר ספוּרִיֶה, בשנת 1931. בשנת 1948 גורשו בני הכפר, וכיום שוכן שם הישוב ציפורי. משפחתו של עלי עברה לחיות בעיר השכנה, נצרת, וטאהא חי שם עד מותו. שירתו עוסקת בילדות האבודה, באנשים הקרובים והאהובים שמתו או רחקו למקומות אחרים, וגם בדרך בה הזיכרון הופך לשירה: שירת אהבה שהיא שירה פוליטית, שירה פוליטית שהיא שירת אהבה.

יחד עם החוקר פרופ' איימן אגבאריה, הסופרת והמתרגמת שיח'ה חליווה והסופרת נועה ירון-דיין נשוחח על שירתו של מוחמד עלי בהקשר של שירה פלסטינית בישראל, על השפעתו על משוררים צעירים ועל ייחודה של כתיבתו על אדמת ספוריה, הנוף והריחות, במבט מפוכח, שאינו ירא דבר, אינו מבקש נקמה, ומוקיר בסופן של שורותיו את השמחה שבלב.
