Conversation between Benjamin Balint and Matti Friedman on the latter’s book on Leonard Cohen’s experiences with IDF soldiers during the Yom Kippur War.

Canadian-born Israeli author Matti Friedman, in conversation with the writer Benjamin Balint, probes the rarely-told account of Leonard Cohen’s experience with IDF soldiers during the Yom Kippur War. Friedman’s exquisitely written recent book, Who By Fire, recreates a moment in the life of Leonard Cohen and the history of Israel. Drawing on never-before-seen material written by Cohen himself, along with
dozens of interviews and rare photographs, Friedman tells the story of a young artist in crisis and a young country at war, and the powerful resonance struck between them – experiences seared into the singer’s memory as mythic events.
